(A birthday poem)

Brain damaged at birth

I took a late breath

And swallowed the universe.

***

Best leave her for dead

The specialists all said

But I was having none of it

***

Institutionalised

Habitually criticised

And socially inept

***

Until love stood me upright

Gave me a reason to fight

And kept me alive

***

I’m so proud to be fifty-five!
